Perched above the Bay of Naples, Sorrento combines beautiful coastal scenery, lively streets, historic architecture, and some seriously good food. Its compact center is easy to explore on foot, with restaurants, cafés, shops, and narrow streets tucked between overlooks offering views across the water.
Sorrento is also an excellent base for exploring this part of southern Italy. The Amalfi Coast is within easy reach, while nearby destinations including Pompeii, Naples, and Capri make it possible to experience a wide variety of the region without constantly changing hotels.
For us, Sorrento was both a destination and a jumping-off point for exploring farther along the coast. From discovering local specialties on a food tour to setting out for a full day through Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, it gave us a great introduction to the food, scenery, and character of the region.

Getting There
Sorrento can be reached from Naples by train, bus, ferry, or car. We traveled by train from the Pompeii area, making Sorrento an easy day trip without needing to drive along the busy coastal roads. Rail service connects communities around the Bay of Naples and provides access to Sorrento from Naples and stops near Pompeii. Once you arrive, central Sorrento is very walkable, and many restaurants, shops, viewpoints, and attractions can be reached on foot. For exploring farther along the Amalfi Coast, organized tours can be an especially convenient option if you'd rather leave the narrow, winding coastal roads to someone else.
