Our Experience - Secret Food Tours: Sorrento
Our Secret Food Tour in Sorrento was one of the more unique food tours we've experienced. Vincenzo guided us through the city while introducing us to the foods and flavors of the region, and it didn't take long to discover just how important one particular ingredient is around here: lemons.
We've eaten plenty of lemons in our lives, but we'd certainly never sprinkled sugar over fresh lemon slices and eaten them as a snack. Somehow, it worked! That was only the beginning of our citrus adventure, with lemon sorbet, lemon cookies, and lemon cake giving us several very different ways to experience one of Sorrento's most recognizable flavors.
Of course, you can't talk about lemons in Sorrento without eventually reaching limoncello. We visited a local producer where we sampled limoncello along with an assortment of other liqueurs, including meloncello, chocolate, and pistachio. It was a fun opportunity to go beyond simply drinking limoncello and experience some of the other flavors being produced locally.
Thankfully, our diet for the afternoon wasn't exclusively lemon. We also sampled some of our favorite Italian foods, including gnocchi and regional cheeses. There's something particularly satisfying about enjoying familiar foods in the part of Italy where the ingredients and culinary traditions behind them originated.
We really enjoyed exploring Sorrento with Vincenzo and appreciated how different this tour felt from a standard collection of Italian dishes. The combination of regional specialties, local producers, and an almost comical amount of lemon made the experience distinctly Sorrento — and gave us a delicious introduction to the city.
