Our Experience - Positano, Amalfi and Ravello Guided Tour

Our full-day tour from Sorrento gave us an easy way to experience three of the Amalfi Coast's best-known towns in a single day without having to tackle the area's famously winding roads ourselves. We traveled by minibus with around 20 people, and having both a dedicated driver and a separate guide made the journey much more relaxing.

The drive toward Positano was absolutely beautiful, with dramatic coastal views unfolding around nearly every turn. Once we arrived, our guide Danilo shared some history and led us toward the church and waterfront before giving us free time to explore. He also pointed out some excellent viewpoints, which made wandering on our own much easier.

From Positano, we took a public ferry to Amalfi. Some reviews we had seen criticized the use of a public ferry, but we actually really enjoyed it. Traveling by water gave us an incredible perspective of the Amalfi Coast and let us see the cliffs and towns from an angle we never would have experienced from the road.

In Amalfi, Danilo guided us into the main square before we were given about two hours of free time. There was an optional boat excursion available for an additional cost, but we chose to skip it and spend more time exploring the town instead. Amalfi itself was probably our least favorite of the three stops — it felt very crowded and heavily tourist-oriented — but we still enjoyed walking around and had a delicious lunch.

And yes, we also ignored Danilo's warning and bought the giant lemon desserts that are very clearly aimed at tourists. Lemon sorbet and lemon gelato served inside an Amalfi lemon? Tourist trap? Absolutely. Something a proud local would probably avoid? Also yes. Did TikTok influence us enough that we had to try it anyway? Of course it did. And was it absolutely delicious? Yes. Yes it was.

Our final stop was Ravello, where Danilo gave us a short guided introduction before setting us free to explore. He again offered useful recommendations for viewpoints and places to visit, and the town felt noticeably calmer than Amalfi. Afterward, we returned toward Sorrento by driving inland over the mountains and back toward the Pompeii area.

The one thing we would have preferred was a little more guided exploration within each town. Much of the experience was essentially an introduction followed by free time, and we later experienced another tour in Tuscany that offered more in-depth guided visits at each stop. Still, this was a very enjoyable way to see Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello in one day, and the combination of coastal driving, ferry travel, and multiple towns made it a memorable introduction to the Amalfi Coast.
