Our Experience - Underground Mine Tour
The World Museum of Mining in Butte offers a fascinating look into an industry that played an enormous role in shaping Montana. There's plenty to explore above ground, with exhibits, equipment, historic structures, and displays dedicated to preserving the stories of the people who worked in and around the mines.
But for us, the highlight was going underground. We opted to add the guided underground mine tour, which takes the museum experience one step further by actually bringing you into the environment you've been learning about. There's something completely different about hearing the history of mining while you're standing inside a mine rather than simply looking at photographs and equipment from above ground.
Our guide taught us about the mine itself, the history of mining in Butte, and what the work was actually like for the miners who spent their days underground. Being able to see the surroundings firsthand made it much easier to appreciate both the engineering involved and the incredibly difficult conditions associated with the work.
