Drive one of America's great scenic roads as it climbs across the Continental Divide and through the heart of Glacier National Park.

🌄 West to East

We drove Going-to-the-Sun Road from west to east, watching the landscape transform as we crossed through the park.

⏰ Go Early!

Our advice for popular national parks applies here more than ever: get an early start to enjoy cooler temperatures, easier parking, and fewer crowds.

🎟️ Plan Ahead

If vehicle reservations or timed-entry requirements are in effect during your visit, check the current rules ahead of time and grab the earliest option available.

📸 Enjoy the Journey

Going-to-the-Sun Road isn't simply transportation across the park—the drive itself is one of Glacier's signature experiences, so leave plenty of time for stops.

Our Experience - Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park delivers the kind of enormous mountain scenery that makes you understand almost immediately why this is one of America's most celebrated national parks. Towering peaks, deep valleys, alpine landscapes, waterfalls, and beautiful lakes surround you as you travel through the park, with seemingly another spectacular view waiting around every bend.

Our primary way of exploring Glacier was driving the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road from west to east. The road crosses directly through the heart of the park, climbing into the mountains and across the Continental Divide before descending toward the eastern side. This isn't a drive where the road is simply how you get between attractions—the road itself is one of the main attractions.

Our biggest recommendation is the same one we give for many of America's busiest national parks: go early. Glacier is enormously popular, and an early start can make a tremendous difference when it comes to traffic, parking, and simply being able to enjoy the scenery without the busiest crowds of the day. If a vehicle reservation or timed-entry system is operating during your visit, check the current requirements well in advance and, whenever possible, choose the earliest available entry.

Most importantly, don't rush Going-to-the-Sun Road. Leave enough time to stop at overlooks, get out of the car, take photos, and simply appreciate where you are. Driving west to east gave us an incredible introduction to Glacier and remains one of the most spectacular scenic drives we've experienced in a national park.
