Our Experience - Eating Palermo Evening Food & Wine Tour
Our Eating Palermo Evening Food & Wine Tour was a relaxed and delicious introduction to Palermo's culinary culture. Our guide Giusi was wonderful throughout the evening, combining an impressive knowledge of Sicilian food with Palermo's history and the traditions that make the city's cuisine distinctive.
And yes, we quickly learned that even the name of one of Sicily's most famous foods comes with a geography lesson. Arancina? Arancino? Arancini? The answer depends on where you are, and learning about those little regional distinctions was part of what made the evening so interesting.
Our favorite bite was a Sicilian-style pizza topped with anchovies, while the caponata was probably the most unique. The sweet-and-sour eggplant dish wasn't something we would necessarily have known to seek out ourselves, making it exactly the kind of discovery we love finding on a food tour.
What made the experience particularly enjoyable was that the stops weren't simply places chosen to hand us another plate of food. Each restaurant had its own history and significance, giving Giusi an opportunity to connect what we were eating with the people, neighborhoods, and traditions that have helped make Palermo what it is. She kept the evening relaxed and enjoyable while still giving us plenty of opportunities to learn along the way.
If there was one stop that didn't quite measure up to the rest of our experience, it was the cannolo. It certainly wasn't bad, but after trying several cannoli during our time in Palermo — including one particularly famous example — this one ultimately ended up being our least favorite. If anything, that says more about just how good the competition is in Palermo than it does about this particular cannolo!
We would absolutely recommend the Eating Palermo Evening Food & Wine Tour. It combined excellent food, wine, history, and a fantastic guide into a fantastic and enjoyable way to begin discovering just how deeply food and Palermo's identity are connected.
