Our Experience - Tuscany Day Trip

This was a long day. We left Florence early in the morning and didn't make it back until after 8:00 that night. But somehow, despite fitting Siena, a Tuscan winery, San Gimignano, and Pisa into a single tour, it never felt like the day was long simply for the sake of being long. It was absolutely packed β€” in the best possible way.

Our first stop was Siena, and this immediately became one of our favorite parts of the tour because we didn't simply get dropped off and told when to return to the bus. We met a local guide from Siena who took us through the city, introduced us to its history, and helped us understand what we were actually looking at as we explored. Our visit included Siena Cathedral before we were given some additional free time to wander on our own. After taking several day trips around Italy, we really appreciated this combination. We still had the freedom to explore, but the guided portion gave us context first.

From Siena, we headed into the Tuscan countryside for lunch at Fattoria Poggio Alloro β€” and WOW. This wasn't simply a quick lunch stop squeezed between destinations. We sat down to a full meal featuring appetizers, local meats and cheeses, salad, fresh pasta with ragΓΉ, dessert, and seemingly one wine after another. We tasted around four different wines throughout the meal before finishing with a dessert wine because apparently Tuscany wanted to make sure nobody was leaving thirsty.

Everything was delicious, and the setting made the experience even better. After lunch, we had some time to step outside onto the terrace and take in the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Off in the distance, we could see the unmistakable towers of San Gimignano rising above the landscape β€” which was particularly appropriate considering that was exactly where we were headed next.

In San Gimignano, we were given free time to explore, along with recommendations for where to go and what to see. After the more structured visit in Siena and a full winery lunch, having some time to simply wander through the medieval town worked really well. We could explore at our own pace before meeting back up with the group and continuing toward our final destination.

And because apparently Siena, a winery lunch, and San Gimignano weren't enough for one day, we finished in Pisa. An optional climb of the Leaning Tower could be added to the tour, but we decided to keep our feet firmly on the ground and focus on the far more important task of taking the obligatory photos pretending to push and pull the tower back into place.

Thanks to a recommendation from our tour guide Mirela, we also knew not to spend our entire visit staring at the tower. We went to the ticket center and picked up complimentary admission to Pisa Cathedral, giving us the chance to step inside before heading back toward the bus. It was an easy addition to our visit that we might not have known about otherwise.

And Mirela deserves a huge amount of credit for how much we enjoyed the entire day. Managing a large bus full of travelers across several destinations over more than twelve hours can't possibly be an easy job, but she was knowledgeable, organized, outgoing, and genuinely fun throughout the entire experience. She offered recommendations at each stop, kept everything moving, and somehow made a very large group tour still feel personal.

By the time we returned to Florence after 8:00 that evening, we had explored Siena with a local guide, visited its cathedral, eaten an enormous Tuscan lunch, sampled enough wine to make the ride especially relaxing, looked across the countryside toward San Gimignano, wandered its medieval streets, taken ridiculous pictures with the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and stepped inside Pisa Cathedral. It was a lot to fit into one day β€” and that's exactly why we loved it.
